Spice Souk

Cues

Buy saffron here — it's significantly cheaper than supermarkets and the quality is excellent when you know what to look for. Ask vendors to show you the difference between grades and always smell before buying. The frankincense makes an authentic souvenir that actually represents the region's heritage.

Insider Cue

Free to wander around on your own but book the guided tour — it brings the history of old Dubai alive in a way you'll miss completely if you just walk through. The guides are warm, knowledgeable and passionate about the heritage of the Creek area. A must-see when you're in Dubai.

Insider Cue

Go in the morning 10am for the best atmosphere and the least pressure from vendors. The inner lanes have better prices than the arcade facing the street. Buy saffron and dried limes here — both are excellent quality and far cheaper than supermarkets. Combine with the Gold Souk a 5-minute walk away and an abra crossing for a complete old Dubai morning.

Description

The souks here still function as actual working markets where local spice merchants sell everything from saffron to sumac at wholesale prices—it's chaos in the best way, and you'll leave smelling like cardamom for days. Go early morning when it's less touristy, skip the carpet pusher touts near the entrance, and bring cash because most vendors here don't bother with cards.
